Image: Supplied Few topics have been as pervasive, or as polarising, as AI. Today, AI-related companies make up 40 per cent of the S&P 500. As capital floods in and valuations climb, investors are torn between excitement and caution: Is this the beginning of lasting change, or a bubble in the making? It’s a fair concern and a risk we’re monitoring closely. For now, though, we do not see clear signs of a bubble. AI is not just lifting stock prices, it’s becoming a key engine of the US economy and a foundational driver of long-term productivity. To put it…
Image: Grant Thornton UAE Each year, our Discovery Series gives us space to reflect on the people who serve in critical but unsung roles in the UAE economy. This year, we felt a mix of pride and concern. Pride in the women who continue to step forward in the financial services sector, a sector that is central to the country’s economic ambitions. However, a concern is that, in the roles that protect organisations from risk and uphold integrity, women are still not represented in the way the UAE deserves. Women leaders on boards The study covered 73 listed financial institutions.…
Slate Auto, the electric truck startup backed by Jeff Bezos, has now collected more than 150,000 refundable reservations for its low-cost EV due out at the end of 2026. The company shared the figure in a new Q&A video with CEO Chris Barman, where she answers questions from those reservation holders about the company’s plans for self-driving (there are none), or whether owners will be able to affix a car seat to the optional rear seats (they will). Reservations are a somewhat helpful metric for gauging general interest in a new car, but they are by no means a signal…
Elon Musk’s X is updating its Terms of Service to indicate it still lays claim to the “Twitter” trademark. The move to add this detail to the company’s terms follows an announcement from a Virginia-based startup, which recently filed an application to trademark the term “Twitter.” The startup, Operation Bluebird, claims that X had abandoned the brand “Twitter” by renaming its social networking service “X.” In its petition to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office filed on December 2, the startup pointed to a post from X owner Musk on July 23, 2023, which proclaimed that the social network would…

After years in the wilderness, it’s a good time to be a nuclear startup. “For the first half a decade that I was telling people I was doing nuclear, I had to convince them, ‘Hey, here’s why nuclear is important,’” Bret Kugelmass, founder and CEO of Last Energy, told TechCrunch. “Now everyone just comes to us saying, ‘Oh yeah, of course nuclear is a key part of the solution.’ I’m like, okay, great, I’m glad everyone’s caught up now.” Last Energy is building small modular reactors — compact nuclear power plants that can be mass-manufactured to reduce costs. The company’s…
Image credit: Getty Images The UAE is preparing for a sustained spell of unstable weather as forecasts from the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) point to rainfall, strong winds, reduced visibility and rough sea conditions across several parts of the country in the coming days. The evolving weather pattern is already affecting parts of the country, with heavy to moderate rainfall reported across areas of Fujairah earlier this week, and additional rainfall and wind activity expected to extend into coastal, northern and eastern regions. Caroline Merin, who spent nearly a decade developing on-demand speed as the first Latin American General Manager for Uber Eats and later the COO of Rappi, recognized how badly healthcare tech lagged behind. While patients expected doctors to respond as quickly as their delivery apps, most medical professionals on the continent are forced to rely on WhatsApp for all patient communication. “I thought, as a patient, especially as an American, how incredible that I can text my doctor on WhatsApp, and they’ll respond,” she told TechCrunch. But Merin also realized just how overwhelming this communication method had become for physicians.…
Food waste startup Mill said Tuesday that it has inked a deal with Amazon to deploy its bins in Whole Foods produce departments across the country starting in 2027. Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund is also investing in the startup, though it did not disclose the amount. The company has raised a total of $250 million to date, according to an Axios report. Food waste is a big problem. About 10% of all food — 43 billion pounds, according to one 2014 study — is tossed every year at U.S. grocery stores. For an industry that operates on thin margins, every pound…
